Hi! My name is Eileen, and I’m a rising sophomore at Yale University. I’m attending an intensive Chinese language program this summer in Harbin, China, funded generously by Yale’s Richard U. Light Fellowship.

As a first-generation Chinese American, it may seem odd to study a language I already half-speak — whether through snippets of conversation with my parents, or on the phone with relatives who live an ocean away. However, I’m interested in pushing my language abilities beyond basic, conversational Mandarin and gaining invaluable cultural immersion along the way.
